![]() | Southeastern American Indian Cancer Health Equity Partnership General Participation Certificate Available 2/1/2026 - 1/31/2029 Commercial Tobacco Use among American Indian Adults Living in North and South Carolina Rachel Denlinger, PhD, MPH Commercial tobacco use remains a leading cause of premature death in the United States and disproportionately affects American Indian (Al) adults. National surveys estimate the current cigarette smoking prevalence for Al adults is 27%; however, state-level and tribe specific data are limited. North Carolina (NC) is home to eight state-recognized tribes. A collaboration was established between the NC Commission of Indian Affairs, the NC Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch, and the Southeastern American Indian Cancer Health Equity Partnership to develop and implement the NC American Indian Adult Tobacco Survey, a commercial tobacco use survey with and for tribal communities to assess overall use among Al residents and by tribal affiliation. The webinar will share findings from Wave 1 of the survey as well as discuss the successful community-engagement approach for survey implementation. |

![]() | Southeastern American Indian Cancer Health Equity Partnership General Participation Certificate Available July 22, 2024 - July 21, 2026 Improving AI/AN Cancer Surveillance Data in the US Melissa A. Jim, MPH Misclassification of AI/AN as non-AI/AN in cancer incidence has resulted in the underestimation of the disease burden in these populations. We routinely link Indian Health Service (IHS) patient registration data with data from central cancer registries that are part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. The linkages provided evidence that, when reporting national rates, the regional variations were masking the real burden of disease among AI/AN. Melissa Jim, MPH will describe our IHS linkage and characterize patterns of cancer incidence among AI/AN by IHS Region. We will discuss sources of AI/AN cancer data. I will also explore the United States Cancer Statistics: Data Visualizations website to show how to find AI/AN cancer data by IHS Region. Accurate cancer data is crucial to develop public health strategies and programs to address cancer disparities. |
