Strengthening Representation in Clinical Research: Approaches to Increase Enrollment of Underrepresented Populations
Course InformationIn this course, Carrie Lee, MD, MPH and Marjory Charlot, MD, MPH, MSc present on the national professional organizations’ (e.g., ASCO, ACCC, etc.) best practices to support enrollment of populations historically underrepresented in clinical research. They share NCI clinical trial enrollment expectations for UNC Lineberger, a comprehensive cancer center, and strategies to increase awareness of catchment area demographics and enrollment demographics. They talk about the collaboration with the UNC Lineberger Clinical Trials Office and the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement that led to research partnerships with UNC Network Community-based oncology practices. They discuss a novel clinical trial design methodology, hybrid decentralized trials, to facilitate clinical trial enrollment closer to home and how clinical trial Navigation along with community engagement can support clinical trial enrollment.
