Course Description

Cancer cells don't just divide — they build, and building takes raw materials. This presentation starts with a 1920s mystery about tumors fermenting sugar in a dish full of oxygen, and follows it to the modern day applications, where that same observation is used to image tumors. Then we look at the exhaust: the reactive oxygen a fast-running cell can't avoid making, why "antioxidants are good" turns out to be wrong, and how researchers are trying to push cancer cells over an edge they're already standing on.
