Allison Lazard, PhD, investigates how to best design health communication to deliver critical information and cancer support. She is currently leading and collaborating on interdisciplinary efforts to improve cancer support on social media – by sharing the good and reducing the bad. Dr. Lazard will share her evidence-based communication science for the benefits and challenges of using social media for cancer support and strategies to reduce the harm of inaccurate cancer claims on social media.

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish helpful cancer support from potentially harmful inaccurate cancer claims on social media.
  • Identify inaccurate cancer claims that are commonly shared on social media.
  • Describe the negative impacts of sharing or engaging with inaccurate cancer claims.
  • Compare interventions that encourage intervening and reduce sharing of inaccurate cancer claims.
  • Discuss motivations behind intervening with and sharing cancer posts on social media.
