PharmFIT Training Module 1: Colorectal Cancer Screening

Course Information

Course Description

This training provides pharmacists and pharmacy teams with the knowledge and skills to support colorectal cancer screening using fecal immunochemical tests (FITs). The session reviews the epidemiology of colorectal cancer, current U.S. screening guidelines, and the role of FIT as a convenient, evidence-based screening option for adults at an average-risk of colorectal cancer. Participants will learn how to determine patient eligibility, provide clear instructions for FIT completion, and ensure accurate handling and return of samples. The training also covers interpretation of FIT results and emphasizes patient-centered counseling strategies, including motivational interviewing, to address concerns and support timely follow-up. By the end of the module, learners will be prepared to integrate FIT screening into pharmacy practice and contribute to improved access and outcomes in colorectal cancer prevention.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the burden of colorectal cancer in the United States, including disparities in screening.
  • Summarize current colorectal cancer screening guidelines for average-risk adults, including recommended starting age and intervals.
  • Explain the purpose, advantages, and eligibility criteria for FIT as a colorectal cancer screening option.
  • Demonstrate the correct steps for completing, storing, and returning a FIT to ensure accurate results.
  • Interpret FIT results and apply patient-centered counseling techniques, including motivational interviewing, to support timely follow-up.
