Multidisciplinary/Multimodality Management of Locally Recurrent Rectal Cancer - SPOC

Webinar Information

Webinar Description

Despite advancements in multimodality therapy and optimal surgery for rectal cancer, approximately 10% of patients will experience a local failure. Expert management of a local recurrence is extremely important, as it directly impacts the quality of life and survival. Approximately 50% of patients who recur are resectable. Those that undergo a complete resection do better than those who are not able to undergo a complete resection. Jose Gaston Guillem, MD, MPH, MBA, will describe how at UNC Medical Center a team of experts carefully reviews each individual patient during a Weekly GI Tumor Board and collaboratively develop a treatment plan which defines the specific timing and sequence of care for each patient. The Colorectal Surgeons at UNC work closely with other members of the UNC Lineberger GI Oncology Program to ensure that patients receive the most advanced multispecialty care in a timely fashion.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the multidisciplinary preoperative evaluation and determination of suitability for resection of a locally recurrent rectal cancer.
  • Describe the multidisciplinary team involved in the management of a locally recurrent rectal cancer and their individual contribution.
  • Explain the essential components of a successful multidisciplinary management of a locally recurrent rectal cancer and factors impacting short- and long-term outcomes.
