Deoxygenated blood from the body flows to the heart from the inferior and superior vena cava into the right atrium. The right atrium pushes the deoxygenated blood through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle and the right ventricle pushes the deoxygenated blood through the pulmonary valve into the lungs. Oxygenated blood from the lungs enters the heart through pulmonary veins into the left atrium. The left atrium pushes the oxygenated blood through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. The left ventricle pushes the oxygenated blood through the aortic valve then blood from the aorta into systemic circulation.
A biopsy of the heart is never taken because of the risk of damage to the heart. Negative effects include blood clots, bleeding from the biopsy site, cardiac arrhythmias, infection, injury to a vein or artery, pneumothorax, and rupture of the heart.
